Presented by Mrs K. Hockings-Mackie at the 10th International Lessons Learned Conference (10ILLC) dated 18 May 17.

The Battle of Depth vs Breadth: A personal experience of complex problem solving as a NZ Staff Officer A personal reflection on previous experiences teaching military doctrine as a key planning tool, to then apply this within a joint multi-national operational level planning environment. I will seek to draw on New Zealand Army’s generalist training model, developing staff officers to have a broad understanding of military planning and its application in a variety of operational contexts. How does having a broader view of the planning process enable the ability to solve complex problems? Does this broad understanding fail to generate depth of knowledge in solving problems?
